Before we started fostering we had planned to adopt - internationally. That is why our URL is "SteeleAdoption". However, the thought of funding the adoption became overwhelming and we had decided we would foster until we could afford to adopt without causing us debt.
Obviously, we fell in love with the 2 little girls that were placed with us almost 20 months ago and plans have changed. We are now hoping to adopt them.
I just find it amazing the way things tend to turn out way better than we could have planned them. And now, not only will adopting domestically be FREE but there is a new tax credit for families who adopt special needs children. I've been told that most children in foster care - even if they seem perfectly "normal" - are considered special needs. Anyway, if you adopt a special needs child from foster care you can claim the tax credit without needing to document expenses. That is $13,170 per child! I'm not sure that our 2 girls will be considered "special need" but there is a good chance that they will be just because they are biracial and a sibling group. Think about what an amazing start to a college fund that would be! Or, just an awesome family vacation. Or, save it for a rainy day, their wedding, their first car... something, anything! I don't think this tax credit should be THE reason someone chooses to adopt, BUT I do hope that it will make those who think they could never afford to adopt reconsider.
Here's a link with more information on the credit: http://http//www.nacac.org/postadopt/taxcredit.html
